Rainbow Cake

Hey! I want to show you two ways you can make a rainbow cake and give some tips about coloring your cake batter.

You can make each layer a different color.

Or you can mix all the colors into one big layer.

How to Make Rainbow Cake:
  • To make each layer a different color: Make it like you would a regular layered cake, but each layer is colored.
  • To mix all the colors in one big layer: Put each color into a separate piping/decorating bag and squeeze out the batter in whatever pattern you want (swirl, stripes, etc.). This way also works with cupcakes!
Batter Coloring Tips:
  • When you add color to cakes it's best to use a store-bought cake mix. This is because to add color, you have to stir the cake batter more than you usually would. With all that mixing, homemade batter can become dense instead of light and fluffy.
  • I recommend Wilton Gel Colors for coloring your cakes and cupcakes. I buy mine at Hobby Lobby, but you can get them other places too. There is also lots of other brands you could try, but Wilton is my personal favorite for most baking supplies.
Whichever you choose, this cake is sure to wow your party guests! It's a piece of cake!
